Note from Andrea M Clarke….
My great-uncle Dr. John Clarke is known as America’s Forgotten Patriot. After a long 9 month voyage from England in 1637, he arrived in New England (Mass.). He was no sooner on shore when he was arrested, sentenced to 30 lashes on the whipping post, threatened with death, banished, just for practicing his faith.
He was a humble, educated man who sought solutions for a New World within everyone would be openly accepted and free to have their own beliefs while living peacefully amongst one another.
John was moved to take action resulting in: “Through Rhode Island’s King Charles II Charter of 1663, Dr. John Clarke convinced the king to grant religious toleration and separation of church and state to a political entity, the diminutive Colony of Rhode Island. For the first time in world history, religious freedom became fundamental to democracy.”
